Climate-Smart Solutions and El Niño Preparedness

A Zamseed sunflower crop in the field

El Niño means unpredictable weather. For farmers, what matters is understanding what changing conditions could mean for your own farm. Depending on your location and ecological zone, you may face a delayed start of rain, a shorter effective growing period, in-season dry spells, floods, or rainfall arriving at unusual times.

That means the old approach — “this is when we normally plant, so I will plant at the same time this year” — may not always be the best strategy.

El Niño is not drought everywhere. It is variability. So the questions worth asking before you plant are: When will I plant? What variety am I planting? How long does that variety take to mature? How does it perform under moisture stress? And what information is available about the coming season?

What makes a variety climate-smart

Zamseed climate-smart varieties are selected, developed and tested locally, with challenging and changing growing conditions in mind. They are designed to:

  • Mature early — critical in areas with a short rainfall period, such as Southern Province.
  • Perform under moisture stress — with built-in drought tolerance to withstand dry spells.
  • Adapt to local conditions — tested across Agro-Ecological Regions 1, 2 and 3.
  • Deliver strong agronomic performance — responding well to good farming practices.
  • Help manage climate risk — with traits that reduce the impact of variable weather.

Choosing Zamseed varieties for your region

Choose Zamseed varieties according to your region, focusing on the key selling points:

  • Maturity class — early, medium or late.
  • Potential yield — high yielding.
  • Drought and disease tolerance.
  • Double cob under good management.

ZMS 451 — resilience in every bag

ZMS 451 is our flagship climate-smart variety, bred for resilience and performance in changing weather. It reaches maturity early, helping farmers beat late rains and dry spells, and it performs strongly across all of Zambia’s agro-ecological zones — Regions 1, 2 and 3.

That wide adaptability is why we call it climate-smart: one variety, built to manage risk and deliver yield wherever you farm in Zambia.

Beyond maize

At Zamseed we go beyond maize. We carry a wide range of climate-smart products across cereals, vegetables and legumes, all developed to help farmers manage risk.

Farmers do not necessarily have to put all their land into one crop. Sorghum, millet, cowpeas, pigeon peas, sunflower and groundnuts can all provide alternative options, depending on your location, soils, market and the seed available to you.

Farming tip: don't bet it all on one rainfall pattern. Early ZMS 451, medium ZMS 638, late ZMS 721 for your best moisture-holding fields

Practical steps for the season

  • Choose the right variety for your zone.
  • Plant at the right time.
  • Conserve moisture by mulching.
  • Control weeds early.
  • Maintain soil fertility.
  • Use climate information to guide your decisions.

Don’t plant blindly

To every farmer preparing for the season, our message is simple: don’t plant blindly. Understand your local conditions, follow credible seasonal information, choose a variety that fits your growing environment, and know the characteristics of the seed you are planting.

Zamseed is committed to providing farmers with quality seed and climate-smart options that support more informed planting decisions. Talk to your agro-dealer, extension officer or Zamseed representative — and plant with purpose.
